Abstract: The current research contributes to the conceptual design of the automated assembly and handling systems. The developed approach is based on the concurrent performance of the physical and control sections, achieving an integrated approach providing time and resources economy. The purpose of this approach is to decrease the lifespan of the designed system, causing a decrease in implementation efforts, integration, tests and maintenance. In this sense, formal tools of analysis and synthesis are used in the process design, achieving a new approach proposed in the present work. The functional description stage, belonging to conceptual design, is analyzed through the various models found in literature, resulting in the identification of the power of representation and the use limitation of such models. A functional description model analyzed, the Channel Instance net, is selected according to its suitability to the aims of the present work. This model allows a coherent treatment of the functional description with the behavioral model used. The behavioral model, resulting from discrete event systems area, based on automata and controllable languages, is used to propitiate an automatic process of synthesis of supervisors, instead of usual manual and heuristic methods. Besides this advantage, the procedure of controller synthesis has the great convenience of being based on open loop dynamic model of the system and on the specification of the expected behavior. This approach adds the behavioral perspective of the system. Following the basis of the present work it is possible to establish a suitable methodology to automated assembly and handling systems, inserting specific concepts and demands.
