Abstract: This work refers to techniques applied to the design of automatic systems, especially those consisting of fluid power components. For the practical case of discrete plants, the work compares the main modeling techniques available for design of fluid power systems and automation. The analysis emphasizes: a) the complementary aspect of modeling tools that describe function and behavior; b) the use of the Channel/Instance Petri Nets for modeling functional aspects of mechatronic systems; c) the use of the Grafcet diagram (IEC 848) for modeling behavioral aspects of discrete systems; d) the possibility of using Discrete Event Systems theory (including the Supervisory Control theory of Discrete Event Systems) to solve logical problems during the controller design stages of conception, verification, and modification.
