Florianópolis is the capital and second largest city of Santa Catarina state in the Southern region of Brazil. It is composed of one main island, the Island of Santa Catarina, a continental part and the surrounding small islands. Florianópolis has a warm humid subtropical climate. The seasons of the year are distinct, with a well-defined summer and winter, and a typical mild weather during autumn and spring. Frost occurs occasionally in the winter. Due to the proximity of the sea, the relative humidity is around 80%. In last week of October the expected temperature varies around 20°C to 27°C.

SYMPOSIUM VENUE
The first day of the FPNI Ph.D. Symposium will be held at the Culture and Events Center at UFSC (http://en.ufsc.br/campus-florianopolis/). On last two days, the conference will move to the Jurerê Beach Village Hotel (http://www.jurerebeachvillage.com.br/en-us/). The registration on the first day will be at the hotel and shuttle service will be provided between the conference hotel and UFSC.Therefore, for your convenience it is strongly recommended to be hosted in Jurerê Beach during your stay in Florianópolis. Special rates at the Jurerê Beach Village Hotel will be applied for the Symposium attendees by reservations through only the hotel reservation center. The prices presented below are in Reais (Brazilian currency) and per room.

General conditions:

• A 2,5% Government Service Tax (ISS) apply to all daily rates;

 

Reservation Confirmation:

• In order to cover any extras, upon check-in we will run a pre-authorization of the credit card submitted by the reserving party in the amount equivalent to 20% the total stay.
• We do not accepts checks.

 

Cancellation policy:

• Reservation subject to cancellation if the payment is not made within the pre-established deadline;
• In the case of cancellation more than 15 days before the check-in date, the hotel will refund the amount paid, discounting only the 10% associated with administrative fees;
• For cancellations requested between 14 days and 24 hours before check-in, the hotel will return the amounts paid by refunding the credit card. This credit card needs to be valid for 6 months after the cancellation date;
• Cancellations requested less than 24 hours before check-in:
• High and Low Season: A charge will apply for the first day, together with all applicable fees. The balance, if applicable, will be refunded to the credit card used within a maximum period of 6 months from the cancellation date;
• Packages: The full amount will be charged, with the credit card holder not entitled to any refund or credit.

 
No shows:

• The guest’s failure to arrive on the check-in date characterizes a no show;
• Reservations without no show guarantee are maintained until 6:00 p.m. on the date of entry.
• For guaranteed reservations, if there is a no show, the hotel will charge the amount corresponding to the first daily rate, together with all applicable fees, and the reservation will remain active until 12:00 p.m. the following day. The balance, if existent, will be refunded to the credit card that is valid 6 months after said date.
• In the case of packages, the full amount will be charged, with the credit card holder not entitled to any refund or credit.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Money

The Brazilian currency is the REAL. The banknotes are in denominations of 100, 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1; Coins: 1.00 real; 50 cents, 25 cents, 10 cents, 5 cents and 1 cent. In general, exchange offices accept exchange a wide variety of foreign currencies, however we recommend that you bring US dollars or Euros, since this exchange more easily than others.

 

Time
The Brazilian territory covers multiple time zones. From GMT, then also in Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, is three hours early (two hours earlier in the summer, including the period of the Ph. D. Symposium)

 

Language
The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. The English language is also spoken, especially in major cities, but the closest language to Portuguese is Spanish with which you can be understood.
