WIEFP2018 – Program and Speakers

Program and Speakers

The workshop consisted of oral presentations of keynote and invited speakers and technical and research presentations connecting people from industry and academy both from Brazil and abroad.

Keynote and invited speakers are distinguished professors and industry executives that shared their experiences and background on fluid power systems, management, innovation, and application areas of control and automation. Technical and research presentations were carried out by engineers from industry and masters and PhD students, both from Brazil and other countries.

The selection of presentations followed a review process and the accepted extended abstracts will be published by the Linköping University Electronic Press with a DOI number and indexed at Google and Google Scholar. The workshop proceedings will be published with DOI and ISBN numbers and will be available at the Linköping Electronic Conference Proceedings. All publications through the LiU E-Press are open access and are protected through the Swedish copyright law, more information available here.

Keynote speakers

 

Prof. Kim Stelson – University of Minnesota, USA

Presentation Topic: Is there a future for fluid power?

Kim A. Stelson received his bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1974 and his S.M. and Sc. D. degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT in 1977 and 1982, respectively. He is director of the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power and serves as a professor in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of Minnesota since 1981. He has been a visiting faculty member at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Auckland and the University of Bath. Stelson was active in the research of modelling and control of manufacturing processes, with focus on metal forming, polymer processing, and composite materials manufacturing. He is now involved in fluid power research including hydraulic hybrid vehicles and hydrostatic transmissions for wind power.

 

Prof. Magnus Klofsten – Linköping University, Sweden

Presentation Topic: Supporting entrepreneurship and innovation in an academic context

Magnus Klofsten is a full professor and founding director of Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at Linköping University, Sweden. His research is oriented towards the early growth and development of technology-based firms, financing young ventures, and university-industry relations. Magnus is a pioneer in teaching and training entrepreneurship. He launched his first entrepreneurship course in 1993 and today he is managing a CDIO-oriented entrepreneurship course that annually attracts over 200 technology and civil engineer students. His PhD course: “Entrepreneurship in Theory & Practice” has since it was launched attracted over 150 graduate students. His entrepreneurship-training programme has resulted in more than 500 businesses spinning-out from the academy and many of those are today multimillion Euro businesses. Klofsten is as acting research leader at the Helix Competence Centre and member of Agora Link Centre for researcher mobility and commercialization of life science technologies. He has published extensively in scientific journals such as Small Business Economics, Journal of Small Business Management, International Small Business Journal, Academy of Entrepreneurship Journal, Technovation, R&D Management, Journal of Technology Transfer, Science and Public Policy, Regional Studies and European Planning Studies.

 

Prof. Torben Ole Andersen – Aalborg University, Denmark

Presentation Topic: Status and trends within Digital Fluid Power

Torben Ole Andersen is the head of the Fluid Power and Mechatronic Systems section in Aalborg University, DK. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering in 1989 at the University of Southern Denmark, followed by an MSc in mechanical engineering and a PhD in control engineering at the Technical University of Denmark in 1992 and 1996, respectively. From 1996 to 1998, he worked as a project manager in the R&D department and between 1998 and 2000 as a university coordinator and research project manager at Danfoss A/S, Nordborg, DK. In 2000 he started as associate professor and since 2005 has been a full professor in Mechatronics at the Institute of Energy Technology at Aalborg University. His main research areas are control theory, energy usage and optimisation of fluid power components and systems, mechatronic system design, design and control of robotic systems, and modelling and simulation of dynamic systems. He is also the leader of two research projects: The Hydrostatic Drive Train Transmission for Renewable Energy Applications, focused on the design of a fluid power transmission for wind turbines and wave energy converters and the SFI “Offshore Mechatronics”, dedicated to developing future actuation systems based on Digital Fluid Power Technology for the offshore industry.

 

Prof. Xiaoping Ouyang – Zhejiang University, China

Presentation Topic: Research of the electro-hydraulic exoskeleton robot

Xiaoping Ouyang was born in China in 1974 and received his BSc and Master degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeast Petroleum University in 1997 and 2000, a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2005. He has been at Bath University, the UK as a postdoctoral fellow between 2005 and 2006. Currently, he is a professor at the School of Mechanical Engineering, Zhejiang University. His research interests include exoskeleton robots, aircraft hydraulics. More than 30 papers have been published and 30 China patents have been granted. He is the deputy director of National Engineering Research Centre of Electrohydraulic Control, member of the Seventh Fluid Transmission and Control Committee of China, director of the Intelligent Fluid Technology Professional Branch in the Fluid Transmission and Control Committee of China.

Eng. Alessandra Holmo – CISB – Swedish-Brazilian Research and Innovation Center, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Creating a collaboration environment between Sweden and Brazil

Alessandra Holmo is a Material Engineer with specialization in polymers from UFSCar. She also has a Master degree in Marketing, in Innovation and recently in Business Intelligence. She is a professional with 25 years of experience in the technical and business development area of big companies, R&D&I and international cooperation as well. She has a strong ability to conduct analysis, identification of opportunities and carry out strategic planning and execution of market development and projects. She has competence in the management of open innovation projects and the creation of international collaborative networks, fundraising and administration in general. Since 2013, she is the Managing Director of CISB.

 

Dr. André Pierre Mattei – SENAI Institute of Innovation for Embedded Systems, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Contributions from the SENAI Innovation Institute for Embedded Systems in the creation of a Brazilian Aerospace HUB in Florianópolis

André Pierre Mattei is the current director of the Senai Institute of Innovation for Embedded Systems and Air Force retired Colonel. Member of the Committee of Defense Industries, COMDEFESA-FIESC. He is a fixed member of the FIESC Technology and Innovation Chamber and a member of Embrapa’s Research Group of the Brazilian Vegetable Phenotyping. His research focuses on cyber-physical systems applied to industry 4.0, model-based systems engineering and real-time embedded systems in both nanosatellites and unmanned aircraft. He was a lecturer at ITA, visiting professor at both MIT (USA) and the French university ISAE-SUPAERO, coordinator of the undergraduate course in aerospace engineering at ITA, technical manager of Air Force projects, responsible for the creation of the research laboratory and course of specialization in electronic warfare at ITA, scientific researcher in optical fiber sensors at IEAv /DCTA, and military pilot. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from USP, Master’s degree in Physics from ITA, Electronic Engineer B. from ITA, MBA in Strategic Management from ESPM, MBA in Business Process from UFF, General Staff Course from the Brazilian Air Force University, and military officer from the Brazilian Air Force Academy.

 

Prof. Antonio Carlos Valdiero – Regional University of the Northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul – UNIJUÍ, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Development and Innovation of Fluid Power Solutions for Industry in a Local Productive Arrangement (APL)

Antonio Carlos Valdiero was born in Volta Redonda, Brazil, in 1969. He received the Mechanical Engineering degree, in 1992, from UFRJ, Brazil, the M. Sc. Degree, in 1994, from UFSC, Brazil, and the Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, in 2005, from UFSC, Brazil. Since 1994, he is a professor at the Regional University of the Northwest of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (UNIJUÍ), Head of the Innovation Center for Automatic Machines and Servo Systems (NIMASS/UNIJUÍ, Campus Panambi), Brazil.

 
 
 

Prof. Eduardo André Perondi – Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Development of a Small Diameter Hydraulic Robot for Pipe Clearance Application

Eduardo A. Perondi was born in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, on September 02, 1961. He received the M.S. degree in engineering from the University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1990, and the Dr. degree in engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Brazil, in the year of 2002. He is an associated professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil), and a researcher of the LAMECC – Laboratory of Mechatronics and Control, at the same University. Prof. Perondi is a member of the ABCM – Associação Brasileira de Ciências Mecânicas and of the SBA – Sociedade Brasileira de Automática. His research and teaching fields include modelling, simulation, analysis and control of mechanical systems.

 
 

Prof. Emilia Villani – Aeronautics Institute of Technology – ITA, Brazil

Presentation Topic: SIVOR Simulator as a Validating Tool for New Aircraft Technologies

Emília Villani received her Doctoral Degree in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of São Paulo in 2004. She is currently an Associate Professor at the Centre of Competence in Manufacturing from the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA) in Brazil. She develops applied research on modelling verification and validation techniques for continuous, discrete event and hybrid systems from the Aeronautics and Aerospace domain. Her research focuses on challenges from the development of aerospace embedded systems and the automation of aircraft manufacturing process.

 
 
 
 
 

Eng. Fabio Soares Mininel – Parker Hannifin Ind. Com. Ltda, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Energy savings in machinery and inclusion of an additive manufacturing process for new products

Fabio Mininel is the National Sales Manager of PARKER HANNIFIN in the Industrial Hydraulics Division at Motion Systems Group. Degree in Electrical-electronic engineering from Faculdade de Engenharia Industrial – FEI in 2002. Postgraduate in Business Administration from Indiana University – IWU in 2010. Extension course in Machine Learning for Data Science and Analytics at Columbia University in 2015. He attended the MIT Executive Education program of Innovation of products and services: MIT approach to Design Thinking in 2017. He has more than 18 years of work in industrial automation, developing solutions and products for the segment and working with hydraulic, pneumatic and electromechanical technologies.

 
 
 

Dr. Flávia Gutierrez Motta – Institute for Technological Research – IPT, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Ecosystem of Innovation in Sweden and Brazil – some lessons

Flávia Motta is the manager of business development at IPT since 2011. She has a degree in Production Engineering from Universidade Federal de São Carlos and MSc and PhD in Production Engineering from Universidade de São Paulo. She has more than 10 years of work in management of innovation and since 2013 is the manager in charge of IPT´s Embrapii Units which has funded and developed more than 50 R&D projects in partnership with industrial companies.

 
 
 

Dr. Joseph Thomas – Wipro do Brasil Industrial S.A, Brazil

Presentation Topic: NPD Lead Time Reduction: Hydraulic Cylinder Cushioning System Design- A Case Study

Joseph Thomas received his Doctoral Degree in ´New Product Development´ from BITS (Birla Institute of Technology & Science), Pilani, INDIA. He is a mechanical engineer with 31 years of Manufacturing and Operations experience in India and the Americas, living in Brazil since 2014. He is the Country Manager & Managing Director at Wipro do Brasil Industrial S.A. and the business leader for Wipro´s hydraulic cylinder business in the LATAM region.

 
 
 
 
 

Prof. Luiz Carlos Sandoval Góes – Aeronautics Institute of Technology – ITA, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Fault Detection and Identification of Hydraulic Systems Using Bond-Graph Modeling

Luiz Carlos S. Góes graduated in Electronic Engineering at the Aeronautical Institute of Technology (ITA) in 1975. Master in Science by the Physics Department of ITA in 1978. Research Assistant and PhD by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1986, with major in Plasma and Controlled Fusion. Professor at the Mechanical Engineering Division of ITA since 1976, Full Professor in Instrumentation and Control Systems since 1991, and Head of the Mechatronics Department of ITA since 2015. His work includes teaching and research activities in modeling, identification and control of aerospace systems, flight testing and control of UAS systems.

 
 

Eng. Marcelo Schumacher – Eaton, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Hydraulic Hybrid for Off-Road Vehicles

Marcelo Schumacher is the HYD Engineering Manager and Business Development for Off-Highway. He obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do SUL – UFRGS in 2002. He has more than 10 years of work on designing hydraulic solutions and providing customer-facing technical application support for Eaton’s distributors, integrators and OEMs, with the purpose of integrating Eaton Advanced Products and components into applications focused on mobile equipment: agriculture, construction and material handling.

 
 
 

Eng. Mario Fernando Valdo – Moog South America, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Electrohydrostatic Actuation System (EAS): Energy efficient, high force and compact alternative to conventional actuation systems

Mario Valdo is the General Manager at MOOG South America. He has a background in electrical engineering (FEI) and business management (FGV) coupled with years of experience in high-performance motion control systems. He started his carrier as an application engineer at MOOG Brazil, installing/commissioning servo-hydraulic systems and providing field technical support. Later on, he became engineering manager, coordinating the application engineering team and bringing new technologies to Brazil. As MOOG Brazil’s general manager, he is responsible for the subsidiary in Brazil and representatives in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. He takes care of local strategy, innovation, new markets development, management of global customers in the region, sales team coordination, business ethics, company culture and philosophy. He is a member of ABPF- Associação Brasileira de Preservação Ferroviária (Railway Preservation Society), ADESG – Associação dos Diplomados da Escola Superior de Guerra (Army School Association), CSHPA- Câmara Setorial de Hidráulica, Pneumática e Automação (Hydraulics, Pneumatics and Automation Chamber, ABIMAQ). Mario enjoys motorcycling, hiking, travel, Hi-Fi music and Do-It-Yourself electronics.

 

Col (ret.) Mats Olofsson – Innovair – Sweden

Presentation Topic: Brazil-Sweden Cooperation in Aeronautics

Mats Olofsson is an Air Force Colonel and has a Licentiate of Science degree in atmospheric science from Stockholm University. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences. Until some years ago Mats Olofsson held the position of Chief Scientist and Head of Research in the Swedish Armed Forces. He now works as a consultant in matters related to R&D and innovation. A major task is to act as coordinator in the Brazilian-Swedish cooperation in Aeronautics, representing Innovair (the Swedish Strategic Innovation Program in Aeronautics). It that role he also supports the governmental High-level Group and Executive Committee and acts as a point of contact for various Air Domain issues.

 
 
 

Prof. Paulo Roberto Gardel Kurka – State University of Campinas – Unicamp, Brazil

Presentation Topic: Digitalization Revolution and its Applications to Industry and Society

Paulo R. G. Kurka is a Professor at the School of Mechanical engineering at Unicamp – São Paulo, Brazil. His mechanical engineering (1982) and MSc (1985) degrees are from the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and his PhD (1989) degree in mechanical engineering from UMIST – University of Manchester, UK. He is active in the areas of system dynamics, signal processing and automation. He wrote a book on Vibration of Dynamic systems (Elsevier, in Portuguese). He is the Secretary of the committee of Dynamics of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Engineering and Sciences and member of the editorial board of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing (Elsevier). His latest works and publications are in the fields of image processing applied to automation and robotics, modeling and control of vibration of flexible structures and the dynamics of railway vehicles. Paulo Kurka has active research cooperation links with the Technion institute – Israel, University of Porto – Portugal and Linköping University – Sweden. He supervised 47 Master’s and Doctoral students and around 25 undergraduate students. He has 3 patents and over 100 journal and conference papers, organized book editions and has written chapters of various books.

 

Eng. Wagner Costa de Mattos – Bosch Rexroth Ltda, Brazil

Presentation Topic: A new generation of hydraulic supply units with integrated intelligence, sensor technology and condition monitoring

Wagner Costa de Mattos is Machinery Application and Engineering Manager and South America Anchor Point for Industrial Hydraulic, Large Hydraulic Drives and Large Projects, working at Bosch Rexroth Ltda. since 1987. He obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Universidade Federal Fluminense – UFF in 1984 and in 1993 his postgraduate degree in Strategic Marketing from Fundação Getúlio Vargas – FGV. Waldir Vianna Junior is the General Manager and partner of ARGO-HYTOS AT Fluid Power Systems, a subsidiary of ARGO-HYTOS GMBH since 2013. Founding partner of AT Industrial Automation since 1999. Graduate Mechanical Technician from Escola Técnica Industrial Lauro Gomes – ETI in 1986. Degree in Mechanical Engineering emphasis on Automotive from Faculdade de Engenharia Industrial – FEI in 1991. Postgraduate in Marketing from Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing – ESPM in 1993. Graduated in Business Administration from Escola Superior de Administração de Negócios – ESAN in 1998.
