Abstract: The objective of this thesis is to present the development of an expert system that facilitates the process of maintainability and reliability design of hydraulic systems. The knowledge systematization in this domain involves the integration of Reliability Modeling, FMEA (Failure Mode and its Effect Analysis) to support the establishment of efficient and cost effective maintenance tasks for each component, according to the strategy known as RCM- Reliability Centered Maintenance. The knowledge systematization in this scope is based on the expert system development phases: feasibility study, knowledge acquisition, representation, implementation and validation. Some contributions are the computational aid to infer predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance activities for each component in the initial phases of hydraulic system design (more precisely for speed-governing of hydroelectric turbines), in the knowledge acquisition process for reliability modeling seeking relevant component for main function of a hydraulic system and the use of the failure mode and its effect analysis for maintenance indication in components with critical failure mode that compromises the main function, personal and environmental safety. The thesis also presents some conclusions from the experts’ feedback during validation of the prototype system. Besides evaluating the system application, these opinions also contribute to suggest perspectives for further studies in the area of maintainability and reliability.
